From University, Richard joined the management development programme of HSBC, becoming assistant manager of a branch in South East London. He swapped banking for accountancy when he joined the Higher Education Funding Council for England, based in Bristol, where he monitored the financial position of universities in the North West region. In September 2003 he joined 3CR to provide financial support and was promoted to the Board as Finance Director in 2006.
