Gathering Data in Complex Environments
Technology Strategy Board Autumn 2007 Competition for funding
£10m is available for highly innovative collaborative research projects in gathering data in complex environments. Projects should address the commercial and technical barriers to tracking, monitoring and control for identified end-users to enable data to be gathered that cannot be currently. Projects should emphasise sensor networking in large-scale, complex and or high density environments.
Industry sectors :
- Retail: stock tracking and logistics
- Environment: air, water and soil monitoring, disaster mitigation and response
- Utilities: control and security of supply
- Transport: traffic management, infrastructure planning and maintenance
- Manufacturing: preventative maintenance and or process monitoring
- Aerospace/automotive: instrumentation and control
- Civil Engineering: integrity monitoring and predictive maintenance
- Chemical and Petrochemical: purity and pollution monitoring
- Healthcare: assisted living and health monitoring of ambulatory patients
- Buildings: facilities and building management systems
- Cultural heritage: environmental management of historic buildings, collections, sites and landscapes
Call Scope :
- Power management and conservation mechanisms to ensure longevity
- Sensor packaging/interfacing to enable operation in harsh and remote environments
- Authoring and adjustment tools to allow end-users to dynamically optimise the sensor infrastructure according to data need and purpose
- autonomic (mobile) sensors and networks to allow the infrastructure to automatically reconfigure itself to collect specified data and to maintain levels of operation and reliability
- Integration of wired infrastructure, wireless systems and or satellite links
- Storage of and access to large amounts of collected data
- Incorporation of sensing components into existing devices (e.g. mobile phones)
- Integration of wired and wireless systems
- On-board filtering of data
